Gamers who love Stratego will love Jatrego. Gamers who do not know what Stratego is will learn quickly through Jatrego. Stratego, as the name implies, is a classic strategy game. Jatrego brings this game online. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia.org that explains the basics of the game:
Stratego is a strategic board game featuring a 10 x 10 square board and two players with 40 pieces each. Pieces represent individual officers and soldiers in an army. One player uses red pieces, one player uses blue pieces.
The object of the game is to find and capture your opponent's Flag, or to capture so many pieces that your opponent cannot move at all.
Each player moves one piece per turn. If a piece is moved onto a square occupied by an opposing piece, their identities are revealed, and the weaker piece is removed from the board. Pieces may not move onto a tile already occupied by the same team. Ties result in both pieces being removed.
For most pieces, its rank alone determines the outcome, but there are special pieces: Bombs (which only Miners can defuse, but which cannot move) and the Spy (which wins an attack against the highest-ranked piece, the Marshal, but loses when attacked by any piece, including the Marshal).
Finally, strategic gamers everywhere can enjoy this game over the internet through a decent client. While the graphics of Jatrego are simplistic, I found that the style actually helped me play the game. I could see the rank of my troops and their placement quite clearly, assisting my strategizing. The interface is very self-explanatory and easy to use.
There are no sounds in Jatrego, but as I said before, I found that this omission only got rid of another distraction. Controls are very intuitive, using only the mouse for troop placement and movement. While there is no manual, one is not necessary; the game is extremely self-explanatory.
Jatrego makes it extremely easy to play Stratego against your friends. One feature I particularly enjoy is that of the observer, which allows others to watch your matches. There are no CPU players in the game, but if you frequent the Gamehippo IRC Chat Server, I am sure you can find someone to play.
