Ata
The full title of this game is "Ata - Extracts from the American Civil War". The game was created by a Finnish team of programmers who calls themselves Badgers. It took them 2 years to finish. Ata is a masterpiece without flaws! It's an awesome wargame with lots of strategy and fun action on the battle field. The graphics and animations are very good with a grain of humor added. I will not go into details about the gameplay because it's well described in the Readme.txt file that comes with the game. But basically, this 2-player game is about the war between the North and the South. One player controls the North troops and the other player controls the South troops. You each start out with only a few stats. There is a neat feature called Observation screen that allows you to look at any state and see what troops are there. I also noticed that in order to move your troops you need to click on the actual soldier for that state and not the state map. This will give you a foot for each state that you can move to. Ata also deals with trading as part of the war strategy. Don't forget that you have to click on the "TURN" icon when you are done with your moves. This game was created with DJGPP.
There is a patch (v1.15) to the download that you need to install too. This patch has a number of features, such as corrects problems with historical menus, improves internal menu handling, adds indians and mexicans, makes footmen capable of stabbing, stabilizes the game and uses VESA-handling code.
You can download the patch here. First you install the regular download, then you install the patch in the same directory. ATA was developed with DJGPP, however VC++ will be the tool of choice for the sequel ATA2.
Clonk Planet is the latest in the Clonk series to be released as freeware. In this game, you must lead your clonks, who are small humanoid creatures, to build grand castles, fight other clonks, and survive all manner of things. It is one of the best freeware games I've ever played. Seriously.
The gameplay in Clonk Planet is fabulous. There are so many things that can happen, mainly losing yourself in holes.
There are many environments and creatures, and multiple types of clonks.
The control in Clonk Planet is it's only downfall. Not because of the buttons, but because of the fact you keep on running without the button being pressed, unless you press down.
There are many environments, and all can be customized easily. There is such variation in this game that it will keep you occupied for endless hours.
One thing you can do, is try to survive the volcanic environment, almost inevitably ending in death. Everything but Fire Monsters can be "lit up", even the bucktoothed dogs called wipfs, whose corpses can then be carried back to home base and sold...........................
The graphics are cartoony, utilising bright colors, and are rather detailed. They serve their purpose very well.
The sound on Clonk Planet is abundant, making for a very enjoyable experience.
In total, Clonk Planet is an excellent game that is not to be missed.

DDCK: Myth of Creation
Wow. This game is great. You control the last sane god and must fight against an unknown enemy by summoning elemental creatures to aid you. You can choose to be good or evil. As RTS (Real-Time Strategy) games go, this game is relatively simple yet it is incredibly fun nonetheless.

Freeciv
Freeciv is an impressive, detailed clone of civilization. It offers online play via servers but is not designed for single player games (although there are servers for this purpose and local games are possible if you make a server). In Freeciv, your goal is to gradually build up your civilization by learning new technology, by building improvements on your city, and by insuring that your citizens are happy. This game has a very steep learning curve, possibly with an exception for those accustomed to Civilization. This game may run a little slow on older machines. It allows users to connect to a special gaming server to make finding opponents very easy.
How to start: Double click civclient.exe. If you look at your taskbar, you'll see that three windows are open. One of them is a DOS window (ignore it), one of them is the main game window, and one of them is the connection window. You need to use the connection window to connect to a server. Just select the metaserver tab and click update. Select a server that is labeled pregame and then click join. Generally, it is a good idea to join a server that already has some players on it.
Lead Soldier
This great game is very impressive. It has nice graphics and sound too. Your men even talk. You are the commander of various soldiers and begin by going through a few simple boot camp missions. After that, the real game begins. You fight with various men, who can drive trucks, tanks, and boats. You can shoot with many weapons, climb mountains, and scuba dive across town. Lead Soldier even has a save feature. Best of all, the authors of Lead Soldier plan to make a second campaign and to create a multiplayer feature. Unfortunately, they made that promise more than a year ago, and haven't even updated their website since then.
Note: In addition to downloading the main game, it is strongly recommended that you download the update patch from our gamehippo.com server here. This patch fixes a few game bugs.
