Bananarama
Bananarama is a beautiful little platform game which plays like a crossbreed
of Lode Runner and Bomberman. You control a little monkey and have to gather all
bananas on a level to advance to the next. However, this is far from easy: there
are humans out there who try to hunt you down, either by stabbing you with their
spears or hurling fireballs at you. You can trick them into charging at you and
if you dodge their assault, they will continue charging until they run into a
wall - at which point they go dizzy and are unable to do anything for a few
seconds, which is usually enough for you to run past them. Apart from humans,
there are also a few kinds of traps you need to watch out for, like spikes
poking out of the ground or pools of lava which incinerate you instantly.
As the game progresses, you gain various special abilities. When you start the
game, you can do nothing apart from basic things - move around and drop bombs
which explode in a very Bomberman-like style. The first skill you gain is the
ability to jump, which can be a life saver at times. Later on, you learn how to
pick up and throw bombs you dropped, as well as detonating them remotely.
The graphics in this game are excellent; the animations are smooth and lovingly
detailed. The sounds effects and background music are good as well. However, the
game leaves one thing to be desired: more levels. I played through the games 16
levels quite quickly and I assume most others won't take long to complete it,
either. Still, it's a nice game to spend some time on and there's always hope
that Natomic Studios will release a sequel or an improved version with more
levels.

King's Valley
King's Valley is another oldie (from 1985), similar to Lode Runner. You climb stairs and ladders in the Egyptian pyramids.

Lode Runner Live
Lode Runner Live is 81K of genuine classic DOS gaming. It's of course a remake of the good old Lode Runner. The game will run very fast on a modern PC which makes it almost impossible to finish even the first level. You may want to use a slow-down utility like Turbo (listed our our site). This game comes with no sound. Level editor included.

LodeRunner
Here we have a sweet and smooth LodeRunner clone that should appeal to anyone with game nostaglia in mind. The story is about a golddigger who collects treasures by excavating numerous levels, while dodging the guardians who kill right on the spot. This game comes with good old graphics a la Apple II. What I like most about this clone is two-folded: Its precision - you cannot idle just a fraction of a second because the baddies move with smartness and exactness, and secondly I also particularly like the animated stickfigures - very cool!
The readme.txt file is in German, byt just use the arrow keys and n/m to dig. A final footnote: The legendary Lode Runner was created back in 1983 for Apple II.
PC REQUIREMENTS: Videocard with OpenGL support, hardware acceleration |

Turbo Lode
Turbo Lode is really a turbo-version of the old classic Lode Runner. The smooth 3D graphics will amaze you! The object of this game is to find all the gold bars -- and the exits -- before the sentries find you. You have no weapons to defend yourself; either outmaneuver the enemies, or hide until it's safe to continue. The game has 15 levels of fun! The game has Open-GL support too but you don't need a 3D video card to play this game. Turbo Lode also comes with a level editor.
PC REQUIREMENTS: 486DX 66 MHz CPU, 16 MB RAM |
