  A Wasting Of Life

The author describes the game:

" Hmm... no storyline.

Awol is a team based deathmatch in which players are given the choice of siding with one of two teams.

Upon spawning, the player is presented with a list of primary (automatics etc) , secondary (pistols), and special (explosives) weapons to select from. Health information is displayed by the red bar on the lower right hand corner of the screen. Across from this, the green bar displays the condition of body armor. Statistics about player and team kills vs deaths ratios are also displayed on the in-game interface. An up, down, or neutral arrow is shown to the left of these stats to represent a positive, negative, or neutral kills to deaths history.

The ability for a team to spawn is regulated by tickets. If a player on either of the teams is killed, the coresponding team's tickets are reduced by one. When no more tickets remain, members of that team are unable to respawn after dying. The remaining number of tickets for both teams are displayed in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Unlike in v1 of awol, the human controlled player runs

by default. Pushing the 'shift' key allows one to walk rather than run. One advantage to walking, although slower movement, is greater accuracy when firing a weapon (standing still allows for the same accuracy as walking)."

The 128 soldier at once capacity is a plus, and the choice of weapons is fine. This is a good game. Just don't go in the open...

  Atomic Butcher
Atomic Butcher is a decent platforming-shooter where you must make your way through ten levels, collecting as much meat as you can, killing enemies with your arsenal of weapons along the way.

Your main weapon in Atomic Butcher is, well...your "weapon." Yes, that's right, to take down an ordinary foe you will, uh, pee on them. It's not really that disgusting, though, as the creators didn't draw sprites for your character's you-know-what. Also very humorous is the character; he's a mutant on mission, and he'll say something sort of funny when he finds some meat. To kill the occasional tough group of foes, you also have access to weapons like the revolver, shotgun, flamethrower, and AK. Throughout your adventure, you'll find a healthy amount of ammunition for these weapons, but you will often have to resort to using your default weapon. The gameplay offers barely any new material, but the levels are well-made, the checkpoints evenly paced (many checkpoints scattered throughout huge levels, very much like Halo's), and I found myself compelled to complete each level. Also, if you get a certain amount of meat in a level, you'll be rewarded with weapon upgrades, which was a nice feature as well.

Atomic Butcher has barely any sound, making a splattering noise when you kill an enemy and a gunshot noise when you shoot something. This is made up for by the cool techno music playing in the background, but I can't help but wish for more sound. The game's graphics range from terribly ameteur-looking to average, and just barely get the job done. Graphics and sound aren't everything, but DHK could have done a better job. I adapt to playing games with bad graphics and sound pretty well, but AB's graphics and sound may be a turn-off to some players.

So, is Atomic Butcher worth the download? At 40 MB, you'll want to think hard on this one. It offers a lenghty adventure for action-platform fans, although the gameplay is nothing new. If you've got a fast connection and you're a fan of action-platformers (like Infection or possibly Teppoman), you should seriously consider trying Atomic Butcher. But if you have a slower connection and you prefer your games fast and difficult rather than progress-based, AB might not be worth the download.

  Bachan-On

Bachan-On is a fun game with a weird storyline. In Bachan-On, you play as robotic grandparents trying to rescue their grandson, who is being possessed by Ronald McDonald. Strange, huh?

Well, while the storyline is very weird, the gameplay is quite normal. You move your player around an arena, shooting at your opponent. You have three weapons per character at your disposal, which act differently depending on how you move around (jumping, dashing, walking, etc.). There are only two selectable characters, but they are very different from each other. Bachan-On feels like a mech game, and can best be compared to Astraia. And, much like Astraia, you’ll only have a chance at winning a round with the computer player once you’ve mastered the controls. Bachan-On’s controls are absolutely horrible, and if you don’t get used to them, you may never fully appreciate this game. And no, you can’t change them, either. However, if you can get used to the controls, Bachan-On is very fun.

Bachan-On’s graphics would have been considered good ten years ago (the game WAS made almost ten years ago, by the way), but by today’s standards, they suck. They’re of the same caliber a blocky first-generation PS1 game’s graphics. If you’ve just finished a game of Splinter Cell, the graphics will appall you, but they shouldn’t get too annoying. Bachan-On’s sound is pretty good for a freeware game, and again is reminiscent of an old PS1 game’s. The whirring noises of the mechs are particularly good.

So, if you think you an bear the bad graphics and horrible controls, and you aren’t looking for a game that will take hours and hours to beat, you’ll probably like Bachan-On. Although, I’m sure there will be a good many user comments saying “d00d this gaem sux a$$” as well. And, it took me a good five minutes to figure out all the controls, so I’ll save you the time and post them here.

  Bakusou
Bakusou most be one of the oddiest game I have every played - and that's a mild expression. Most likely, some of the most frequently uttered adjectives about this game will be: "bizzare, repulsive, and eccentric". I really didn't enjoy this game very much in all honesty. The main reason I reviewed this Japanese oddity anyway is by virtue of its extreme graphical features and gameplay. The gameplay revolves around your soul's final quest to avoid being dragged into Hell. You have an arsenal of kick movements - both simple boxing and combos, to defend yourself against souls of the darkness. Precaution: Although not fully explicit, some nudity of the 3D character makes this game not suitable for sensitive people.
Your keyboard controls are Ctrl, and the arrow keys for combo kicks.

  Beats of Rage
The King of Fighters is my favorite fighting game series. Streets of Rage is my favorite side-scrolling beat-em-up series. Someone finally got the bright idea of taking these two great tastes and putting them together. The result: Beats of Rage.

Beats of Rage takes the game play of Streets of Rage and fuses it with the characters of The King of Fighters. These is achieved through direct sprite rips. The majority of the characters are lifted from The King of Fighters 2002, although a few are from some of the earlier games.

The play style of Streets of Rage has been duplicated almost exactly, and veterans of the series will feel right at home. Most of the SoR techniques are present, including the throw recovery, which is absolutely essential. If you knew how to do something in SoR and you try it here, chances are that it will work.

This particular adventure follows three heroes as they attempt to defeat the evil Rugal... I mean, "Mr. Y." Along they way they will face a huge assortment of thugs waiting to dish out some punishment. Many of the enemies you face are parodies of SoR characters, parodies of KoF characters, or both.

You will spread your rage across some very nicely done backgrounds, including the mandatory elevator stage. Is it just me, or is every game of this type required to have an elevator stage? Despite the nicely done backgrounds, there really isn't much variety to the stages, and this is the one thing that really bugs me about Beats of Rage. The game can get repetitive very quickly.

Despite the occasional area that drags on longer than it should, Beats of Rage is an outstanding effort. You can really tell that the developers has a lot of fun making this game, particularly when choosing the enemy names, Billi Vanilli comes immediately to mind. It seems strange to me that Whip wasn't present in the game to represent Electra, maybe she shows up on one of the higher difficulty settings.

There's a nice bonus to unlock if you beat the game too.

Note: This is a DOS game, which means that you may have trouble running it under certain versions of Windows. Sound is usually the biggest problem.

PC REQUIREMENTS: Pentium, 24MB RAM
